Name of Island: Puerto Rico

Overview (Brief summary): Puerto Rico is located to the east of Cuba, right in the middle of the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles. It is approximately 3,515 square miles that consist of one main island and various smaller ones, and is home to a little less than 4 million people. Like it’s neighbors, Puerto Rico has the Caribbeans signature tropical climate, very mild with little seasonal variations. Puerto Rico is famous for it’s agriculture, mostly sugar. However, tourism is now a huge component of their economy, mostly through cruise ships. They have a very unique culture, a mix of 4 main ones: African, Taino, Spanish and North American. Their music is influenced by the Africans, while their language is more influenced by the Taino and the Spanish.

Type of Island: Mountains, with beaches.

Shore Excursion Plan:
Craft’s Market – Sells items that are specifically from the island of Jamaica such as hand made hats, bags, baskets, etc…
Doctor’s Cave Beach – A nice beach with white sand and a clear water

Name of Island: Cuba

Overview (Brief summary): Cuba is located in the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, north of Jamaica. It is approximately 42,800 square miles, which is home to over 11 million people and consists of 2 main islands and several archipelagos. Like many of Cuba’s neighbours, it has a very tropical climate, averaging 21 °C during the winter and 27 °C in the summer. Due to where Cuba is situated, it is prone to frequent hurricanes, most common during September and October. One of Cuba’s most important economic resources is nickel, having the second largest reserve of nickel in the world. Many say Canada and the United States are the melting pots of the world, but Cuba is also one. Consisting primarily of Spanish and African decent, it has a very unique culture. Sports, music as well as literature are just a few of its unique points.

Type of Island: Main islands consist of plains, ranging from flat to rolling. Near the southeast, there is a range of mountains called the Sierra Maestra.

Shore Excursion Plan: Casa de las Tradiciones – A very popular bar/club for couples only. Guess that’s out.
Revolution Plaza (Plaza de la Revolucion) – One of the larger town centers in the world, with many government buildings and a memorial.
La Taberna de Dolores – Another popular bar/club with food and drinks. Popular with the locals, and situated near Dolores Park.

Overview (Brief summary): Jamaica is the third largest Caribbean island, which is located in the Greater Antilles in the Carribean Sea, south of Cuba. It is approximately 235 km and 35 km to 82 km wide. The current population is about 2,825,928. The climate of Jamaica is tropical weather, like hot and humid. It has many white sandy beaches and clear seas. Jamaica has a wide range of music such as folk ballads, work songs, revivalist hymns and reggae.

Name of Island/Country: Dominican Republic

Overview (Brief Summary): Dominican Republic is located in the Greater Antilles between Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean and east of Haiti. It totals the area of 48,730 sq km and the population is 9,650,054. The rainfall depends on the seasons, however it has little seasonal temperature variation. Dominican Republic has strong GDP growth rate, however due to the recession, the GDP has a significant impact on them.

Type of Island: Mountains.

Shore Excursion Planned:
Juan Dolio Guayacanes – Quite beach, fishing village and is not very crowded.
El Conde Street – A Shopping strip. It has many stores that sells various items and includes many varieties of the culture.
El Conuco – A place too eat for a reasonable price. You get a lot of entertainment as well as authentic food.
Mercado Modelo – It is a flea market that sells gifts and candy
Secretos Musical Bar – A bar that plays Latin music as well as serves drinks.

- Baseball is their national sport
